Tijuana-born mezzosoprano Guadalupe Paz was a member of a children’s choir committed to the revival of sacred repertoire at the early age of 6 years old. Since then, music and singing marked her life. In 2009 she graduated from the Conservatorio Arrigo Pedrollo in Vicenza, Italy and since her professional debut in 2008, Paz has been an active performer for the National Opera Company of Bellas Artes in Mexico City.

Recent engagements include her debut at the Mainly Mozart Festival in San Diego as well as singing the role of Mercedes in Bizet’s Carmen for the San Diego Opera Company. Other operatic roles in her repertoire include the leading role of Montezuma in Montezuma by Carl H. Graun, Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus, Isabella in L’italiana in Algeri, Marchesa Melibea in Il Viaggio a Reims, Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Angelina in La Cenerentola, Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel, Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, Olga in Eugene Onegin; Isolier in Le Comte Ory, Maddalena and Marchesa Melibea in Il Viaggio a Reims, Lucilla in L’Occasione fa il ladro, Ernestina in La Scala di Seta, La Messaggiera in L’Orfeo and Dorabella in Cosí fan tutte.

On the concert stage Mrs. Paz has performed gala concerts along notorious tenor Javier Camarena at Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City, at Auditorio Príncipe Felipe de Asturias with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Oviedo and at Bellas Artes Theater in Mexico City with the Bellas Artes Orchestra.

Among sacred repertoire she has sung as soloist on Stabat Mater by Pergolesi, Magnificat and Johannespassion by Bach, Messiah by Handel, Requiem and Vesperae Solennes de Confessore by Mozart, Ninth Symphony and Choral Fantasy by Beethoven, Stabat Mater and Petite Messe Solennelle by Rossini, F Minor Mass by Bruckner and The Glagolitic Mass by Leoš Janaček. Contemporary and Symphonic repertoire comprise Gustav Mahler’s 2nd and 3rd Symphonies performed at Palacio de Bellas Artes with the National Symphony Orchestra, Cary Ratliff’s Ode to Common Things performed with La Jolla Symphony and Chorus, Mario Lavista’s Tres Canciones para Orquesta y Mezzosoprano, Manuel De Falla’s Siete Canciones Populares, Romeo and Juliette by Hector Berlioz, and Kurt Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins, the latter performed at Harris Hall during the Aspen Music Festival in 2013.

Mrs. Paz has worked with great conductors such as Alberto Zedda, Jan Latham-Koenig, Eduardo Diaz-Muñoz, Yves Abel, Ivan López-Reynoso, Carlos Miguel Prieto, Srba Dnic, Marcelo Ayub, Nikza Bareza, among others. During her career she has also been a recipient of diverse accolades such as the 1st place in the inaugural competition of the Rossini Award in the United States in 2015 organized by the Palm Springs Opera Guild of the Desert, and a 3rd place in the open vocal category by the same competition in 2016. 1st place at the Musical Merit Foundation of Greater San Diego in 2013 and 2014, finalist at the International Singing Competition “Toti dal Monte”, and 2nd place winner of the Mexican Singing Competition “Carlo Morelli”.

Future engagements include the leading role of Frida Kahlo in the opera The last dream of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera by Gabriela Lena Frank and Nilo Cruz and the role of Mistress of the Novices in Suor Angelica by G. Puccini both to be produced by the San Diego Opera Company in the Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 respectively.
