Jeffrey Gwaltney is a young American tenor of thrilling vocal potential, fine musical instincts and convincing dramatic presence. During the past two seasons, he has made impressive debuts in London at the Royal Albert Hall as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly and at Opera Holland Park as Dick Johnson in La Fanciulla del West and as Luigi in Il Tabarro, the Scottish Opera as Erik (George) in The Flying Dutchman, and Opera Ireland as the Prince in Rusalka for Opera Ireland. In the U.S.A., he has appeared with Opera on the James, Opera North, and PORT Opera as Rodolfo in La Boheme, Opera Idaho and Opera North as Don Jose in Carmen, and Mobile Opera as Pinkerton.

This season, he will appear at the Wexford Festival in Ireland as Simon Perez in Frederick Delius’ rarely performed Koanga and make debuts with Opera Carolina as Canio and Edmonton Opera as Don Jose.

Notable conductors with whom he has worked include: Philippe Auguin; Placido Domingo; Christoper Eschenbach and Daniele Rustioni. Notable directors include: David Alden, Stephen Barlow, Anne Bogart, and Francesca Zambello.

He began his professional career with the Washington National Opera after being awarded the Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Scholarship in 2010, appearing on their main stage as Abdallo in Nabucco and Normanno in Lucia di Lammermoor. He was also a member of the Glimmerglass Festival’s Young Artists Program in 2011 and 2012 and appeared on the company’s main stage as Jason in Medea in 2011 and as Officer Snow in A Blizzard on Marbelhead Neck.

Jeffrey Gwaltney received a Bachelor’s Degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Indiana in 2006 and a Masters Degree in Vocal Performance from Winthrop University in 2009. A former student of Gary Lakes, Mr Gwaltney is currently a pupil of John Fowler.
